Link Building

The Fact is: SEO is hard and only going to get harder with Google’s algorithms and such.  To get your website even onto page 10 would take what seems like a lifetime and even then it may not make it.  What are we small business owners suppose to do?  How can we even stand up to the BIG GUYS, you know the ones with million of dollars that can hire a team of SEO gurus, build a $100K website and rank on page 1 on day 1!!

1st we need to do some brainstorming.  Figure out what you’re going to sell, who your competitors are and what keywords are likely to bring in traffic.

If you’re able to complete this in one day, you’re doing something wrong.  Research hard and really look through different online retailers and scope out the competition, go to Google Keyword search and look up the analytics of each word you chose.  Put some serious thought into the matter, it’s okay to change your mind, because research usually does that us.

Now here comes the good stuff, once you’ve chosen your niche, keywords and are all set up, what’s next….

Link Building!

Link building is a concept of placing your store’s url on blog sites, in forums, social media etc.  The more your site is on the web, the more important Google thinks you are.  The more people click on your site, Google thinks you’re even MORE important and you will begin to see your 1000000000000th place on Google and Bing go to 100000000 and so on.

But don’t rush out and start linking your website everywhere you have to be methodical and think about where you are linking, what type of site is it.  That way your link power begins to build stronger.  If it starts out strong, Google doubts your link power and turns away from sites that are quick and posting everywhere.

When you are building back links, make sure to have a plan in together, its easier to keep track of where you posted your links, which have ones have anchor text distribution, applying links throughout your site and keyword targeting.

Make sure you research backlink pages –

· How much content do the sites have

· How old are the sites?  Older the better.  Meaning more established.

· What are the analytics of the sites – you can check these metrics with tools such as majestic.comMoz.com and various others.
· How many back links does the site already have.  We dont want to post on a site that has 1500 back links already, yours will be lost among the shuffle.  Where is your competition back linking too, you will likely need to build a comparable back link profile in order to compete with these sites.

· What are the quality of links pointing to these ranking pages? They might have 10,000 referring domains but if they are all spammy web 2.0 properties then you can probably beat that with a much lower number of high quality links

· What type of sites are ranking on page 1? This is where you really need to understand the niche you are entering – during this stage you should build up a profile of the competition in your niche – who are the giants within the niche, who are the independent sites, who are the niche authorities? Once you have this information you should think about what sites are ranking for each keyword – if page one is filled with giant retailers and sites like Wikipedia for example then its going to be very hard to rank regardless of what any tools might say. If on the other hand you see a lot of other niche sites ranking on page one, then you know that its not going to be that hard.
